Travel opens up a whole new scope for picture-taking. However, there is holiday photography and there is art photography. We should do both but remember that holiday snaps are personal and anybody can go to the Web and find similar pictures. The trick is to capture the spirit and character of a far-away land but do it in a way that is different to everybody else. That’s easy for me since I like to photograph people and all people are different but when in India, for example, how easy is it to record the Taj Mahal in a way that’s not already been done before?
Though I started photography many years ago and have a strong darkroom background, my work these days is predominantly digital for convenience. My day job is in IT and so photography remains a mostly leisure pursuit though I do take it seriously. I am an active member of Cambridge Camera Club and lecture and judge at camera clubs throughout East Anglia and beyond.
